Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Reprint
Courtesan Trimming a Lamp
Series; Customs of the Passing Years
Publisher - Adachi from a rare series of Edo masterwork designs. Adachi publisher seal in margin or on reverse.
Adachi was one of the most respected publishers of the 20th century. Their woodblocks were printed to the highest standards with excellent color and fine detail. Founded in 1925, Adachi also chose interesting and varied subjects for their prints and was the only publisher of many famous old ukiyo-e images.
Courtesan Trimming a Lamp - A very early Kunisada design, before 1813. This fantastic print by Kunisada reflects on the design style of Utamaro and Kiyonaga whom he was emulating at that time. A young beauty is seen in her under kimono, extinguishing the light in her room at nighttime. The ash tray near the pillow and two teacups suggest that a man is waiting in bed for her. A lovely, sensuous design, a Kunisada masterwork. Fantastic for display.
