Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Scene from Edo-zakura Kiyomizu Seigen, 1858
Comments - Interesting scene from the kabuki play "Scene from Edo-zakura Kiyomizu Seigen" featuring Onoe Kikugoro IV as Princess Sakura and Ichikawa Sadanji IV as the priest Seigen. The beauty smiles coyly as she lifts her kimono sleeve while the priest tugs on the end of her obi. She wears a red kimono patterned with her namesake cherry blossoms (Sakura), the sleeves trimmed with bows and tassels. Seigen glares back at her with an angry frown. At right stone steps lead to a temple building, the wooden supports of which can be seen behind them on a grassy slope above a stone wall. Nice expressive figures with an interesting setting, detailed with an embossed pattern on Seigen's white kimono.
