Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Scene from Kurabekoshi Ise Monogatari, 1850
Comments - Handsome kabuki double portrait of Iwai Kumesaburo III as the farmer Mameshiro and Ichikawa Kuzo II as his widowed mother-in-law Kasugano no Koyoshi in a scene from the play "Kurabekoshi Ise Monogatari." The young man looks up with a happy grin, his hair pulled back into a thick ponytail tied with a white cord. Koyoshi stares at him with an alarmed expression, her eyes wide. Interrupted while fulling cloth on the block at lower left, she still holds the wooden mallet used to pound the fabric. Beautifully detailed with embossing on Koyoshi's white hair and kimono collar. Nice expressive figures set against a softly shaded background.
