Beauty Being Ravished by Kappa by Utamaro (1750 - 1806)

Utamaro (1750 - 1806) Japanese Woodblock Reprint
Beauty Being Ravished by Kappa
Poem of the Pillow

Beauty Being Ravished by Kappa - Unusual image of two kappa attacking and ravishing a diving girl. Kappa are mythological creatures or water spirits, depicted as either mischievous or evil. Here, the creatures grapple with a beauty underwater as she attempts to fight them off, surrounded by seaweed and curious little fish. Her companion watches from a rocky outcropping, holding her hand to her chin. A basket filled with abalone rests on the shore beside her and a pine tree frames the scene. A famous design from this Utamaro shunga series.

Typically, when reprinted, this subject was sanitized with carefully placed seaweed over the genitals of the kappa. In this reprinting, it is produced as the original without the seaweed covering.

Artist - Utamaro (1750 - 1806)
Image Size - 8 7/8" x 13 1/2" + margins as shown
Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Please see photos for details. Excellent overall.
