Hidari Jingoro Viewing a Sculpture, 1894 by Toshihide (1863 - 1925)

Original Toshihide (1863 - 1925) Japanese Woodblock Print
Hidari Jingoro Viewing a Sculpture, 1894
Series; Eighteen Honorable Men and Deeds

Hidari Jingoro Viewing a Sculpture, 1894 - Intriguing scene of the famed sculptor Hidari Jingoro sitting on the floor before a large wooden crate holding a life-size sculpture of a beautiful young courtesan. He leans back on one arm, holding a cup of sake with his other hand as he carefully studies the lifelike image. According to legend, his creation was so realistic that it actually came to life before him. The beauty is dressed in fine formal robes tied with a pink and red obi, the white kimono collar embossed with a geometric pattern. Incredibly fine line work in the simulated wood grain of the crate, with a subtle burnished floral pattern in the red-orange border. A fascinating diptych.
