Original Yoshitora (active circa 1840 - 1880) Japanese Woodblock Print
Sato Masakiyo Battling an Enemy, 1866
Comments - Dramatic scene of Sato Masakiyo (the real-life Kato Kiyomasa) engaged in a duel with an enemy. Riding a black horse at right, Masakiyo wears an elegant red vest over his armor, a fringed personal standard fluttering over his head as he thrusts his broken weapon at his foe. The samurai at left grimaces angrily as he raises the handle of his spear to block the blow, wearing a fine suit of armor and a horned battle helmet with a flowing red wig. A group of samurai gathered at right watches the combat intently, most frowning while one man appears to laugh gleefully, their spears held upright. Mountains stretch out into the distance under a darkening sky. Nicely detailed.
