Hideyoshi's Challenge by Kokunimasa (1874 - 1944)

Original Kokunimasa (1874 - 1944) Japanese Woodblock Print
Hideyoshi's Challenge

Comments - Terrific scene illustrating the funeral of the great Oda Nobunaga at Daitoku-ji Temple in Nara. In the center, Toyotomi Hideyoshi, who would become Nobunaga's successor and the second great unifier of Japan, holds the young son and heir of Nobunaga. Clasping the child safely against his shoulder he gestures imperiously with his fan, challenging the daimyo Shibata Kasu'ie and two of Nobunaga's other sons, who dispute the young boy's claim. The men react angrily, leaping to their feet, mouths open as they angrily contest Hideyoshi's statements. The purple drapery hanging from the temple pillars is features the mon or crest of the Oda Clan. A dramatic composition with wonderfully expressive figures and lovely detail, including a beautiful burnished gourd and vine pattern on Hideyoshi's red robe and touches of embossing and silver mica. A nice choice for a student of military history.
