Original Naomasa (active circa 1830 - 1860) Japanese Woodblock Print
Enjoying the Evening Cool at Ryogoku Bridge in the Eastern Capital, 1847 - 1852
Comments - Terrific view of pleasure boats on the Sumida River crowded with patrons enjoying the evening cool. In the center, a large ship is hung with red paper lanterns, with laborers atop the cabin roof poling the craft along. At right, a woman chews on a toothpick as eh leans against the roof of her boat, a man inside the cabin pouring a cup of sake for a young beauty. At lower left, a woman reaches over the side of the boat to rinse her sake cup in the flowing water. Ryogoku Bridge stretches across the background, packed with pedestrians as fireworks shoot across the starry night sky above. A wonderful summer scene with lively detail.
