Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Scene from Hatsu-momiji Ogura no Shikishi, 1854
Comments - Interesting scene from the kabuki play " Hatsu-momiji Ogura no Shikishi" of a samurai playing a hand drum resting on his shoulder, looking up at his companion with a haughty frown. The courtesan smiles back at him, patting her hair with one hand. She wears a chrysanthemum print kimono trimmed with bows on the sleeves over a red under robe, tied with a red print obi. A folding screen behind them features maple leaves. At left, a samurai kneeling on the other side of the screen draws his sword with an angry grimace, the face of the young man shaded in blue, a sign of impending death or otherworldliness. Nice expressive figures in an attractive setting.
