Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Hanaya Tokubei Eavesdropping on a Couple, 1855
Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of Hanaya Tokubei eavesdropping on his wife and a man, standing behind a sliding shoji panel at left. Inside the room, Tokubei's wife Ofusa tilts her head and smiles slyly at her guest, the master of Sagamiya, who stares back at her with an alarmed expression, a pipe in hand. He kneels on a cushion beside a low screen decorated with a colorful maple tree above a stream. In the center behind the beauty, a kettle sits over the ashes of a hibachi. A little girl pats her hair, resting one hand on her mother's shoulder. Kataoka Gado II , Nakamura Daikichi III as Ofusa, and Arashi Kichisaburo III Great expressive figures in a nicely detailed interior setting.
