Naniwa Gossip, 1884 by Kiyochika (1847 - 1915)

Original Kiyochika (1847 - 1915) Japanese Woodblock Print
Naniwa Gossip, 1884

Comments - Intriguing scene of a group of nobleman gathered in an interior, gossiping and laughing at one of their members. The title refers to Naniwa, the former name of the city of Osaka. The poor object of their attention kneels at left, wearing a purple robe with a large turnip on the back as he looks ahead dejectedly. The man in the center attempts to stifle his laughter, pressing his hands to his mouth, as the woman behind him collapses in amusement, the other beauties hiding behind their kimono sleeves. The group appears to be in the midst of a poetry contest, with poem slips laid on low tables and stacks of books next to the man at right. An unusual and fascinating subject with lively color and fine detail in the setting and furnishings, including an embossed pattern on the white robe, and burnishing on the small black lacquer stands.
