Kajiwara Kagesue by Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861)

Original Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861) Japanese Woodblock Print
Kajiwara Kagesue
Series; Stories of a Hundred Heroes of High Renown, 1843 - 1844

Kajiwara Kagesue - Kajiwara Kagesue was a warrior serving the Minamoto clan during the Genpei War against the Taira. Kagesue earned fame for racing his horse across the Uji River in a contest to be the first to engage the enemy on the opposite shore during the Second Battle of Uji in 1184. Unfortunately, Kagesue lost to his fellow samurai Sasaki Takatsuna. Here, he frowns angrily as he studies a message he has just written, a brush in his other hand and a container of ink on the floor nearby. His chest plate sits on the floor behind him. A nice expressive figure.
