Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
Confrontation in the Country, 1866
Comments - Interesting kabuki scene showing a confrontation between three men at a house in the country. The man in the center scowls angrily at the fellow at left, who reacts with alarm, throwing his hands out at his side with a worried expression. His companion at right seems similarly upset. Each wears an outer kimono pushed down at the waist over a blue tie-dyed kimono, and black leggings. A small box tied with cord lies on the ground in the center, with a tree stump and wooden buildings behind them and trees on either side. The left panel features Kawarazaki Gonjuro I and the center panel shows Bando Hikosaburo V. A handsome design with expressive figures and a nicely detailed setting.
