Scene from Kirare Otomi, 1864 by Yoshiiku (1833 - 1904)

Original Yoshiiku (1833 - 1904) Japanese Woodblock Print
Scene from Kirare Otomi, 1864

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene from the play commonly known as "Kirare Otomi" (Scarface Otomi), the mistress of a gang boss, who was caught in a tryst with her lover Yosaburo. The gang boss slashed her all over with his sword and left her for dead, but she survived the ordeal, covered with scars. Here, Otomi sits in a palanquin at left, smiling sweetly up the gang boss Akama Genzaemon, who stares back at her wit a tight-lipped frown. A petty criminal known as Yasu the Bat for the bat-shaped tattoo on his face, kneels at his side, looking up with an angry expression. From left, the actors are Sawamura Tanosuke, Nakamura Shikan, and Ichikawa Kuzo. Nice detail in the setting.
