Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861) Japanese Woodblock Reprint
Series; Men of Ready Money with True Labels Attached, Kuniyoshi Fashion
Nozarashi Gosuke - Great kabuki portrait of the otokodate or street knight Nozarashi Gosuke. He stares to the side with a tight-lipped frown, one hand resting on the hilt of his sword. He carries his other sword over his shoulder, from which is suspended a wooden geta clog with an eerie resemblance to a skull and a tie made from a withered stalk of grass. He wears a blue outer robe with a design of grasses growing through skulls, over a black kimono with skulls made up of cats, and a red under robe with blossoms on it. A great expressive image, beautifully composed and detailed. The series title takes its name from a contemporary kabuki play.
