Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Reprint
Series; Stars of the Night and Frost of Morning: Genre Scenes of Contemporary Women
Publisher - Adachi from a rare series of Edo masterwork designs. Adachi publisher seal in margin or on reverse.
Adachi was one of the most respected publishers of the 20th century. Their woodblocks were printed to the highest standards with excellent color and fine detail. Founded in 1925, Adachi also chose interesting and varied subjects for their prints and was the only publisher of many famous old ukiyo-e images.
Pillow-side Screen - Intriguing design of a courtesan reclining with her lower body under a heavy quilt thrown over a kotatsu, a brazier placed under a wooden table or frame. A small folding screen called a pillow-side screen creates privacy for her quarters. She holds a pipe in one hand and bites the corner of her kimono collar, and a couple of books rest on the corner of the quilt. Beautifully detailed with fine embossing in the white kimono trim, the book covers, and the small cloth tossed over the folding screen.
