Original Utamaro (1750 - 1806) Japanese Woodblock Print
Shaving the Baby's Head, circa 1802
Comments - Charming scene of a barber shaving a baby's head while the child sleeps. The barber carefully uses a razor while the mother holds the baby on her lap. Her kimono hangs open at the chest, and her hair is tied back with a white sash. A shallow pan of water rests on the floor next to the barber's lacquer chest. An attractive scene from everyday life in old Edo. This print comes with an original label stating that is was a gift from the collection of Florence Lounsbery Alexander in 1951 (see below). A Florence Lounsbery Alexander appears in the New York Social Register in 1912 and 1924, but we have been unable to find out any other information about her.
