Publisher - Adachi from a rare series of Edo masterwork designs. Adachi publisher seal in margin or on reverse.
Adachi was one of the most respected publishers of the 20th century. Their woodblocks were printed to the highest standards with excellent color and fine detail. Founded in 1925, Adachi also chose interesting and varied subjects for their prints and was the only publisher of many famous old ukiyo-e images.
Beauty with Irises - Attractive portrait of a courtesan in an interior, a shallow black wooden tub on the floor holding a cluster of purple irises. She wears a plum-colored robe bordered with blossoms, tied with a red and pink cloud patterned obi. She rests her cheek on one hand with a dreamy expression, lost in thought as she absent-mindedly plays with a hairpin. Her hair is elegantly arranged with many tortoiseshell combs and hairpins. A beautiful design with soft color.
