Original Kunisada III (1848 - 1920) Japanese Woodblock Print
Saito Tarozaemon Sacrificing a Child, 1899
Comments - Dramatic kabuki scene of Ichikawa Danjuro IX as the Hojo warrior Saito Tarozaemon, who has been ordered to murder a young prince. Instead, he sacrifices his own grandson to repay a debt of honor. Here, he holds the struggling boy under his arm as he raises a drumstick above his head. In the center, his daughter and the boy's mother, Hasayuki, tries to intervene, as does her husband at right, the samurai Doki Yorikazu, who thrusts out his hand in a stopping gesture. Red maple leaves frame the view outside the window, with a sliding panel at right decorated with yellow clouds framing undulating water. From left, the adult actors are Ichikawa Danjuro, Nakamura Fukusuke, and Onoe Kikugoro. Detailed with embossing on Tarozaemon's hair and burnishing on the black areas of his kimono and the boy's hair.
