Sparrow and Cockscomb, circa 1925 - 1935 by Endo Kyozo (1897 - 1970)

Original Endo Kyozo (1897 - 1970) Japanese Woodblock Print
Sparrow and Cockscomb, circa 1925 - 1935

Endo Kyozo - A graduate of the painting section of the Tokyo School of Fine Arts, Endo Kyozo practiced the traditional Japanese painting style known as "yamato-e," which dates back centuries to the Heian era. Kyoto artist Matsuoka Eikyu is credited with reviving and modernizing the Yamato style in the 1920s and 1930s, and Endo Kyozo was active in that movement, helping to found the Shinko Yamato-e Kai to promote the style. These lovely, softly colored woodblocks capture Kyozo's painterly style using simplified forms and shapes that give them a modern look. A few subjects include silver or gold metallic pigment. This is the first time we've seen prints from group of nature scenes, which include blossoms, birds, insects, and fish. These beautiful designs are a great choice for a shin-hanga collector.

Artist - Endo Kyozo (1897 - 1970)
Image Size - 11 3/8" x 16 1/4"
Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Slight paper remnants on reverse at top edge and bottom corners from previous mounting. Slight toning and soiling, wrinkling at corners. Some prints have a few spots or marks. Please see photos for details.
