Utamaro (1750 - 1806) Japanese Woodblock Reprint
Hour of the Horse (12 Noon)
Series; The Twelve Hours in Yoshiwara
Publisher - Adachi from a rare series of Edo masterwork designs. Adachi publisher seal in margin or on reverse.
Adachi was one of the most respected publishers of the 20th century. Their woodblocks were printed to the highest standards with excellent color and fine detail. Founded in 1925, Adachi also chose interesting and varied subjects for their prints and was the only publisher of many famous old ukiyo-e images.
Hour of the Horse (12 Noon) - A lovely Utamaro design of three beauties of the Yoshiwara in their private quarters wearing informal kimono, relaxing before they prepare for an evening out. One woman leans forward to look in the mirror as she adjusts her hair, while another shows a love letter to her companion. A beautiful reprint, the background sprinkled with metallic gold flecks like the original.
