Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Series; Snow, Moon, and Flowers of Eastern Genji
Snow, 1855 - Attractive scene of beauties on a verandah in winter overlooking a snowy courtyard. The two women at center chat as they walk along while at right, an attendant follows a beauty up the stairs, carrying a red lacquer table piled with dishes and a bowl of food. The verandah opens onto a snowy courtyard with pines and a stone lantern. A visitor has just arrived through the garden gate, bundled up against the cold, his servant holding an umbrella over him. At left, a young girl walks along carrying a small ceramic container of glowing red coals or embers. She smiles as she moves along, unaware of the two women whispering outside a room at left. A handsome design with a wonderful setting.
