Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
A Fashionable Parody of the Comparison of Lovers on a Rainy Night, 1857
Comments - Attractive scene of beauties inside a bedroom reading love letters. Prince Genji hides behind a folding screen at left, covering his mouth in amusement as he listens to the women chatting and discussing their messages. The ladies recline on a large bed, two of them engrossed in their letters, while a kneeling woman at right fills a pipe next to a tobacco set on the floor. Wooden panels line the room, and the folding screen depicts a variety of scenes from nature, including a landscape of the famous Monkey Bridge, and birds and flowers images. A handsome design with wonderful detail in the interior setting, such as the sandals in the hallway outside each doorway. A charming subject.
