Original Kuniyoshi (1797 - 1861) Japanese Woodblock Print
Scene from Kamakurayama sakura go-shozome, 1847 - 1852
Comments - Dramatic scene from the kabuki play "Kamakurayama sakura go-shozome" of the evil Iwafuji attaching the court attendant Onoe. The lady-in-waiting raises a sword high above her head as she grimaces with rage. Kneeling on the ground, Onoe thrusts her umbrella at her attacker to deflect the coming blow. Blossoming cherry trees fill the background against a softly shaded night sky. From left, the actors are Onoe Kikugoro IV as Churo (middle-ranking court lady) Onoe and Matsumoto Kinsho as Tsubone (lady-in-in-waiting) Iwafuji. Nicely detailed with a burnished pattern on the black kimono.
