Series; Mirror of Famous Generals of Japan

Mirror of Famous Generals of Japan - Yoshitoshi designed this fantastic series of fifty-one prints of military heroes from 1876 to 1882. These dramatic images of famous warriors created a sensation with the Japanese public. His realism and drafting skill captured the important legacy of these national heroes at a time when Japan was struggling with the aftermath of the Satsuma Rebellion. Classic Yoshitoshi images, these dynamic prints are a great choice for collectors.

Minamoto no Yoshimitsu Instructing Toyohara no Tokiaki in Music, 1879 - Intriguing scene of Minamoto no Yoshimitsu and a young samurai seated on a low platform at Mount Ashigara, with Yoshimitsu playing a reed pipe called a sho. The young man is Toyohara Tokiaki, the son of the master sho player who had taught Yoshimitsu how to play the instrument. Tokiaki had followed Yoshimitsu as he left to go into battle, wanting to join him. Instead, Yoshimitsu invited him to sit down and listen as he played a beautiful old song that his father had taught him, to urge him to remain at court at carry on his father's musical legacy. A full moon glows softly in the night sky, the view of the mountains framed by a large pine tree. A quietly moving image, beautifully detailed with fine line work, and burnishing on the black fur scabbard.
