Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Courtesan and Kamuro, 1858
Comments - Attractive scene of a high-ranking courtesan and her kamuro or child apprentices on an evening stroll through the Yoshiwara. She wears a plum colored kimono patterned with peonies over layers of under robes, tied with a red obi featuring a striking lion pattern. The girls wear matching kimono. At left, a servant shelters the beauty with an elegant umbrella. A classic Edo era beauty subject.
