Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
A Spring Night, 1847 - 1852
Comments - Handsome triptych of Prince Genji paying a visit to a beauty on a spring night. He kneels in the center, smiling as he looks up at the beauty, wearing a brown coat with circular motifs and resting his hand atop a folding fan. The woman smiles sweetly down at him as she tucks her hand into her robe. An ornate pot hangs over a floor brazier at left, with a tray on the floor nearby holding a container with a dipper resting across it. At right, two women chat, one holding the nobleman's sword while the other leans against a rustic wooden pillar. The room overlooks an ancient tree covered with cherry blossoms and buds. An attractive design with wonderful detail in the elegant fabrics and interior, including touches of embossing. The Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, has this image in its collection.
