Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
A Parody of the Hana no en Chapter in Genji, 1855
Comments - Attractive scene of Prince Genji and beauties enjoying a banquet celebrating the blossoming cherry trees. In the center, Genji waves to a young woman leaning over the verandah of the upper story while a beauty reclines against him with her hand on his knee as she pours him a cup of sake. A large tray of sushi and other refreshments are spread on the floor before them. In the courtyard garden behind them, a couple of men admires the flowering trees. Wonderful detail in the architectural setting.
