Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
Nakamura Shikan as Nio Nidayu and Bando Hikosaburo as Akashi Shiganosuke, 1873
Comments - Dramatic kabuki scene of Nio Nidayu raising a pipe above his head as if to strike his companion, and enraged expression on his face. He wears a striking black kimono with a fierce dragon on it, tied with a twisted white sash that is delicately embossed. At left, Akashi Shiganosuke frowns angrily as he looks ahead, ignoring Nidayu and pushing up the sleeve of his light blue under robe. A bold black and yellow striped border adds graphic impact. Nice large expressive figures set off by the deep red background.
