Yosooi of the Matsubaya
Comments - Lovely okubi-e or large head portrait of the courtesan Yosooi of the Matsubaya. She smiles happily as she looks over her shoulder, her arm raised as if slipping on the gray robe at left. She holds a book with a marker in it, and wears a red kimono patterned with scalloped motifs over a red and yellow leaf and grass print robe and red under robe with a white collar. Her hair is pulled back into a large sleek bun, adorned with a comb and many hairpins. A peony blossom frames the yellow title cartouche at upper left. A classic Utamaro beauty design, beautifully detailed with embossing in the white kimono collar and very fine line work in the hair.
