Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Revenge of the Soga Brothers
Comments - Fantastic triptych of the young Soga Brothers sneaking up outside the hunting lodge of their sworn enemy, Suketsune, who murdered their father when they were young children. The youngest brother, Juro, climbs the wooden steps, preparing to draw his sword as a beauty sheltering a lantern under her kimono sleeve looks out the doorway. The older brother, Juro, holds a flaming torch as he looks cautiously over his shoulder, a frown on his face as a light rain slants across the sky. An incredible scene of the moments just before the brothers will avenge their father's death. Nice expressive figures, detailed with lacquer on the black caps and faint cloth embossing on the white drapery at upper left.
