Beating a Beauty by Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
Beating a Beauty

Comments - Unusual kabuki image of a man beating a beauty with a bamboo broom. The poor woman is tied to a wooden pole with a rope around her upper body so she cannot escape the blow. Out of the corners of her eyes, she watches the matron at right, who grimaces angrily as she yanks on the beauty's ponytail. A dramatic scene with large expressive figures set against a night sky.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)
Image Size - 13 3/8" x 27 7/8"
Condition - This print with excellent detail as shown. Three attached panels, backed with paper. Horizontal and diagonal folds. A few small holes, repaired. Wrinkling throughout, slight toning and soiling. Please see photos for details.
