Eisui (active circa 1790 - 1823) Japanese Woodblock Reprint
Hanahito of the Ogiya
Series; Beauties during the Five Festivals

Woodblock reprints - In the 20th century, artists and publishers collaborated to recreate famous woodblock prints for interested Japanese collectors and Westerners looking for rare designs. New blocks were made, and the prints were painstakingly printed by artisan printers in the same method as the 19th century originals - one block for each color. Woodblock reprints were an opportunity to collect and enjoy a famous design at a small fraction of the price of an original. They still are today.

Hanahito of the Ogiya - Attractive portrait of the courtesan Hanahito of the Ogiya holding a decorated container topped with a printed cloth and tied with curly ribbons. She smiles with delight as she contemplates the gift, supporting it delicately with her hand. Her hair is pulled back into a sleek bun adorned with many hairpins and a dark pink ribbon. Although the title cartouche, in the shape of a folding fan at upper right, names her kamuro or child apprentices, they are not depicted in the print. A lovely design, rarely seen in reprint.
