Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
New Play at the Kabukiza: Zoho Momoyama, 1896
Comments - Interesting illustration from the play "Zoho Momoyama" at the Kabukiza or Kabuki Theater in Tokyo. At left, Ichikawa Danjuro IX appears as great warrior Kato Kiyomasa, talking to an elderly woman in an encampment outside a burning castle. Dressed in armor, he grips the elegant black lacquer handle of a naginata with both hands. The woman looks up with a grimace, clutching the edges of her outer kimono, as orange smoke pours up into the night sky above the silhouette of the fortress. The actor at right is Ichikawa Sumizo. A handsome design, detailed with faint embossing in the woman's white kimono and hair.
