Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Courtesan in a Rooster Kimono Kakemono
Comments - Beautiful kakemono or vertical diptych of an elegantly dressed courtesan. She looks down with a shy smile as she straightens the edge of her obi. She wears a striking outer robe with a pattern of pet birds in a wicker cage with a rooster sitting atop it, blossoming plum branches, and a fan decorated with clouds and waves, trimmed with layers of brocade. She wears tall geta clogs with three "teeth" rather than the usual two, identifying her as a high ranking courtesan, and her hair is styled with floral and bird motif hairpins. A lovely design with wonderful detail.
