Trio in an Iris Garden by Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
Trio in an Iris Garden

Comments - Handsome kabuki scene of a courtesan and two men in an iris garden. The fellow in the center holds up a small drawing of a lion figurine, scowling angrily as he looks at his companion at right. The fellow looks up with a cheeky grin, a pipe in one and a tobacco pouch and pipe case in the other. The beauty smiles happily as she watches the man in the center. Large iris blossoms and green leaves against a red background provide a dramatic setting for the figures, and a simulated black lacquer frame borders the image. The actor at right is Nakamura Shikan. An interesting design.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)
Image Size - 13 3/4" x 27 5/8" + margins as shown
Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three attached panels, backed with paper. Slight separation at ends of vertical folds between panels, a few wormholes, repaired. Slight toning and soiling, a few creases. Please see photos for details.
