Original Chikanobu (1838 - 1912) Japanese Woodblock Print
Variety of Flowering Plants at the Height of Autumn, 1879
Comments - Lovely scene from of Prince Genji and a group of beauties enjoying a stroll along a narrow winding stream to enjoy the flowering plants. The young nobleman stands at far right holding a fan, two attendants kneeling beside him. In the center, a beauty in a red kimono patterned with large flowers looks back over her shoulder at him with a wistful expression. Autumn grasses and flowers fill the countryside, with a maple tree at left and a lantern on a pole near the center. A yellow glow spreads along the horizon and the sun sets beneath a deep red sky. A charming triptych with vibrant color and pattern, detailed with burnishing in the black kimono and obi, and embossing on the white kimono collars.
