Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
Beauty in Heian Era Dress
Comments - Handsome portrait of a beauty wearing formal court dress from the Heian era, a style known as "junihitoe" or "twelve layers" because of the many layers of kimono worn on top of each other. Extending from beneath her sleeve is a small bamboo basket with pine sprigs and cherry blossoms, trailing multi-colored ribbons. Confetti-like dots are scattered across the background. An attractive design.
