Maehara Ikkaku Gripping a Spear, 1877
Series; Chronicle of Famous Warriors and Scholar Heroes (Bunbu komeiden)
Maehara Ikkaku Gripping a Spear, 1877 - Fantastic portrait of the rebel samurai Maehara Ikkaku gripping a spear behind his head, shouting as he prepares to strike during a battle in the Satsuma Rebellion. His face is contorted with anger and concentration as he confronts his enemy. He wears a fine suit of armor over a red shirt laced up under the arms, his hair combed smoothly back from his face. Beautifully detailed. A dynamic, expressive design by this student of Yoshitoshi.
