Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
Nakamura Shikan as Nuregami Chogoro, 1864
Comments - Fantastic kabuki portrait of Nakamura Shikan as Nuregami Chogoro, a sumo wrestler who purposely loses a match to earn a favor for his patron. He grimaces angrily as he looks over his shoulder, biting his tongue between his teeth. The black portions of his kimono are beautifully detailed with a burnished stripe pattern, and his hair is pulled back into a thick topknot tied with a white cord. The portrait appears in a shaped inset set against wide diagonal bands. A bold design with real graphic impact.
