Nakamura Shikan as Nuregami Chogoro, 1864 by Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print
Nakamura Shikan as Nuregami Chogoro, 1864

Comments - Fantastic kabuki portrait of Nakamura Shikan as Nuregami Chogoro, a sumo wrestler who purposely loses a match to earn a favor for his patron. He grimaces angrily as he looks over his shoulder, biting his tongue between his teeth. The black portions of his kimono are beautifully detailed with a burnished stripe pattern, and his hair is pulled back into a thick topknot tied with a white cord. The portrait appears in a shaped inset set against wide diagonal bands. A bold design with real graphic impact.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)
Image Size - 14 1/8" x 9 3/4" + margins as shown
Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Slight paper remnants on reverse at top corners and bottom center from previous mounting. Large loss at edge, repaired. Slight soiling and spotting, a few creases. Please see photos for details.
