Eavesdropping by Kunichika (1835 - 1900)

Original Kunichika (1835 - 1900) Japanese Woodblock Print

Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of a man eavesdropping on a couple, an enraged expression on his face as he peers around the shoji panel at left. Inside, the beauty tilts her head and smiles coyly at her companion. He looks back at her with an angry frown, a pipe in one hand and the other resting atop a pillow as he prepares for bed. Red peony blossoms decorate the panels framed with purple at the back of the room, and a warm light glows in the lamp at far right. Nice large colorful figures in a handsomely detailed interior setting. Detailed with burnishing on the black kimono collars, the beauty's obi, and the black fur trim on the quilt over the bed.

Artist - Kunichika (1835 - 1900)
Image Size - 13 3/4" x 28 1/8"
Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three attached panels, backed with paper. A few small holes, repaired. Creasing, slight soiling, vertical folds. Please see photos for details.
