Taira no Tomomori and the Child Emperor, 1888

Comments - Terrific kabuki diptych depicting the leader of the Taira fleet, Taira no Tomomori, during the naval battle at Dan-no-ura. Facing defeat, Tomomori decided he would commit suicide by tying himself to an anchor and leaping into the sea. Tomomori wears a kamishimo patterned with the Taira butterfly crest and a tall court cap with horns attached. He grips a naginata with one hand as he gestures toward the child Emperor Antoku at right. At left agitated warrior grimaces back at him, his long hair sticking out wildly around his face as he forces a man to the deck before him, gripping his wrist as he twists the fellow's arm behind his back. Nicely composed with large, expressive figures and detailed with fine line work in the hair.

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three attached panels, backed with paper. Vertical folds. A few small holes, repaired. Slight soiling, a few stains. Please see photos for details.
