Original Toyokuni III/Kunisada (1786 - 1864) Japanese Woodblock Print
Sumo Wrestling Arena, 1847 -1852
Comments - Fantastic triptych depicting a sumo ring entering ceremony before a match in an enormous arena. The wrestlers in the ring wear belts that open out into ceremonial aprons trimmed with fringe, with other sumo lined up on either side. The floor is crowded with fans, only their heads visible, and the stands surrounding the arena are crowded with wealthier patrons, with ladders providing access to the upper tiers. Wonderful detail in the panoramic scene. A terrific subject for a collector interested in this ancient and timeless sport.
