Sumo Wrestlers Arguing, 1873

Comments - Terrific scene from a kabuki play about two rival sumo wrestlers. The younger wrestler Chokichi becomes incensed when he learns that his rival Chogoro purposely lost a match to him in order with favor with a patron. At right, Chokichi leans forward with an angry frown as he thrusts a straw-wrapped cask at his enemy. He wears a red kimono with a striking image of a huge butterfly on the back. In the center, Chogoro grimaces back at him with a cask in his hands as well. The beauty at left watches with an alarmed expression. Oversize wisteria blossoms fill the background against a red sky, with two yellow butterflies fluttering about, a reference to the title of the play, commonly known as "A Diary of Two Butterflies in the Pleasure Quarters." A simulated black lacquer frame borders the image. A terrific, bold design.

Condition - This print with excellent color and detail as shown. Three separate panels, backed with paper. Fold at corner. A few small holes, thinning spot at edge, repaired. Slight toning and soiling, a few creases and marks. Please see photos for details.
