Original Meiji era Japanese Woodblock Print
The 47 Ronin, Act 1: Tsurugaoka Hachiman Shrine: The Helmet Inspection
Comments - Handsome illustration of the first act from the classic kabuki play "Kanadehon Chushingura," based on the famous tale of the 47 Ronin. The beautiful Lady Kaoyo, the wife of Lord Hangan, has arrived at Tsurugaoka Hachiman Shrine to identify a samurai's helmet. She kneels in the center, looking up with a distraught expression after Lord Moronao has made advances towards her. At right, Moronao turns away from the beauty with a frown after she rebuffs him. At left, Lord Hangan leans forward with an angry frown after witnessing the exchange. Behind them, stone steps lead to the shrine. Nicely detailed with burnishing on the black court caps and Moronao's robe.
