Original Kunisada III (1848 - 1920) Japanese Woodblock Print
Samurai Offering a Bottle of Sake, 1884
Comments - Interesting kabuki scene of Genzo Akagi holding out a sake bottle to the beauty Omisa at right. He thrusts it at her with an angry scowl, watching her intently. She gazes back at him with a slightly suspicious expression as she pats her hair into place. At left, Omisa's husband, Enzan Yozaemon stands in the doorway holding a snow-covered umbrella, watching the pair soberly. Behind him, snow blankets a blossoming plum tree against the wintry gray sky. From left, the actors are Ichikawa Danjuro, Onoe Kikugoro, Bando Shucho, and Nakamura Fukusuke. Includes burnishing on the woman's black kimono. A striking design with a bold black and white dogtooth border.
