Publisher - Adachi from a rare series of Edo masterwork designs. Adachi publisher seal in margin or on reverse.
Adachi was one of the most respected publishers of the 20th century. Their woodblocks were printed to the highest standards with excellent color and fine detail. Founded in 1925, Adachi also chose interesting and varied subjects for their prints and was the only publisher of many famous old ukiyo-e images.
Festival Dancers Pillar Print - Terrific image of seven men and women performing various dances during a festival. The two beauties in the foreground perform the harukoma odori (toy horse dance), while the man in the straw hat does the sparrow dance (suzume odori). Hokusai has masterfully composed the image so that the zigzag pattern of arms provides a sense of movement leading the eye up and down the page. A charming, colorful design, perfectly suited to the pillar print format.
