Original Yoshimori (1830 - 1884) Japanese Woodblock Print
Hojo Yasutoki and Retainers, 1864
Comments - Interesting scene of the daimyo Hojo Yasutoki and his retainers atop a high cliff. The general sits on a folding stool at right, surrounded by his men, each wearing full armor and ready for battle. In the center on a plateau below, a castle is surrounded by a moat, with the standards of marching troops visible above the trees. At left, another group of samurai is gathered atop a cliff, watching as a fleet of ships approaches the rocky shore. An intriguing image with an unusual perspective.
