Oi by Hiroshige (1797 - 1858)

Hiroshige (1797 - 1858) Japanese Woodblock Reprint
Oi
Series; Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaido

The Sixty-nine Stations of the Kisokaido - Hiroshige’s fantastic Kisokaido series was designed in collaboration with Keisei Eisen in the mid-1830s. Comprised of seventy prints, Eisen contributed 23 images to the series, with Hiroshige providing the rest. This masterpiece series chronicles life along the Kiso Highway, the upper road along the mountains from Edo to Kyoto, mirroring the lower Tokaido. Hiroshige's Kisokaido landscapes maintain his typical balance between figures and nature, with masterful depictions of weather and seasons, and a number of especially lovely moonlit scenes. These poetic and atmospheric views offer a captivating vision of the beautiful and often dramatic countryside of Japan.

Yuyudo Publisher - In the early 20th century, the Yuyudo publishing house had already distinguished themselves as one of the finest publishers in Japan. They adhered to the same exacting standards of 19th century publishers while some of their publishing colleagues took shortcuts. In the 1950's, as interest Edo era woodblock prints was reigniting, Yuyudo embarked upon a project to produce reprints by the great masters from the Golden Age of Ukiyo-e. They hired the finest woodblock printers and carvers in the world for this endeavor. The resulting prints were some of the highest quality reproductions ever made. We are pleased to offer this beautiful reprint from the Yuyudo publisher in our auctions today.  Yuyudo prints are exceptionally well done and very finely printed. Each bears a Yuyudo Publisher stamp on the margin or reverse. Bid now on prints from this fantastic collection!

Oi - Beautiful winter landscape scene of two travelers on horseback, their mounts being led by men walking. They trudge forward slowly with heads down, their straw hats and mantles blanketed with snow as flakes gently fall around them, tall pine trees flanking the path. Beautiful shading in the cold gray sky, with a fine hand-applied spattering of white pigment to simulate falling snow. A masterwork Hiroshige design. This print is considered the most highly desirable subject from the Kisokaido.
