Utamaro (1750 - 1806) Japanese Woodblock Reprint
Series; Contemporary Dancers
Publisher - Adachi from a rare series of Edo masterwork designs. Adachi publisher seal in margin or on reverse.
Adachi was one of the most respected publishers of the 20th century. Their woodblocks were printed to the highest standards with excellent color and fine detail. Founded in 1925, Adachi also chose interesting and varied subjects for their prints and was the only publisher of many famous old ukiyo-e images.
Yoshiwara-suzume - A lovely Utamaro dancer subject and a rare piece to find in a reprint. Yoshiwara-suzume means Sparrows of the Yoshiwara, a type of epic song performed as a dance drama. The beauty wears a sleeveless coat typical of a bird seller, and a sheer silk head covering in soft green. This fantastic composition is beautifully balanced with wonderful soft color and excellent detail with a shimmering off-white mica background.
